Positive Psychology Coaching vs Life Coaching

As a life coach, you’ll have the opportunity to help others achieve their goals and make positive changes in their lives. It’s a rewarding and fulfilling career that enables you to make a difference in the world. However, becoming a successful life coach takes hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn and grow constantly.

The term ‘life coach’ used here is a very broad term, and it encompasses many coaching specializations.

We’ll educate you on all the aspects of training to become a certified life coach and setting up a business as a professional life coach.

Qualifications and Requirements

Unlike other professions, becoming a coach does not require any education requirements. This is mainly because of the non-regulation of the coaching profession.

However, what you need are traits that make a successful life coach. While there is no specific degree or certification required to become a life coach, it’s important to have a strong foundation in the principles and practices of coaching.

Anyone can become a coach. But a successful life coach:

  • follows an ethical code of conduct,
  • is qualified to provide coaching,
  • possess qualities such as openness, empathy, approachability, and curiosity
  • has undergone extensive training and supervision and has great experience with coachees

Get the right education and training

You can become a coach from any program, or you can become a globally recognized coach with strong credentials. There are always two paths.

The most highly recognized training organization across the globe is International Coaching Federation (ICF). (MasterMyLife is accredited with ICF and recognized as a Level-2 organization)  European Mentoring and Coaching Council and Association for Coaching are two other training organizations.

The best first step is to get trained by an institute accredited with ICF or other bodies as they govern the standards of coach training.

ICF certifies coaches in three stages based on the amount of training and the number of hours of experience they have. The levels are:

Note: These hours are categorized by the ICF by the number of equivalent student contact hours, aka, ICF’s Level 1 Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH) or ICF’s Level 2 Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP).

Look for a reputable coaching school or program that offers comprehensive coaching education & training in areas of the coaching process, coach core competencies, PCC markers, coaching business, life skills, and leadership skills. A few of the coaching schools also offer coaching practice and coaching business development support that can certainly help you in getting hold of your coach career during the launch phase. Read through our resource on how to choose the right coaching institute.

What does it cost to become a life coach?

The initial investment to make to become a recognized and successful life coach is worth it as you progress in your career or business.

The fees of a life coaching program can range from USD 2,000 to USD 15,000, depending on the coaching school & the program level, whether level 1 or level 2, and whether including mentor coaching assessments or not. MasterMyLife, a Level – 2 ICF accredited institute a level 2 coaching education program including mentor coaching, assessment & business development support for less than USD 5,000. Foundational 4 Steps to getting certified and starting your business as a professional life coach

Similarities between Positive Psychology Coaching(PPC) and Life Coaching

They work to bring a positive change in life

Both professionals work on the belief that people want to change for the better – in themselves and their lives. They both work with individuals who want to focus on growth, are open to feedback, are motivated to learn and grow and experience the results of coaching.

They are not therapists

Neither of the coaches attempts to fill in the role of a therapist in an individual’s life. Instead, they work with individuals who have a certain level of emotional confidence and resilience and are open to bringing change. They work with individuals who are ready to face and handle challenges.

They understand the value of negative emotions

The upside of it, you get to enjoy flexibility and autonomy, experience personal and professional growth, earn your dream income, and find a sense of purpose. If these benefits align with your values and goals, a career as a coach may be a great fit for you.

You can get on a call with one of our expert coaches to get a deeper understanding of the coaching space and how you can take a step ahead.

They empower individuals to take charge

Both coaches include using models, exercises and activities to enable individuals to look deeper within themselves, understand and bring positive change from the fundamentals. They help improve individuals’ self-awareness, make effective decisions and choices to move forward and create the life they want.

Differences between Positive Psychology Coaching (PPC) and Life Coaching

While life coaching offers a more all-encompassing approach to personal growth and development, the positive psychology approach is primarily concentrated on assisting people in developing a positive mindset and increasing well-being.

Positive Psychology Coaching (PPC) Life Coaching (LC)
Assist individuals in setting and achieving more introspective and personal goals. Eg: enhancing general happiness and sense of purpose
Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential
Focus To improve happiness and well-being
To assist individuals in achieving specific goals, including improving their relationships or their careers.
Takes a more prescriptive approach and concentrates on certain methods and ideas for enhancing happiness and well-being.
Takes a more adaptable strategy that is customised to the requirements and objectives of the individual.

The method for setting goals differs between life coaching and positive psychology coaching based on each coach’s approach.

Which Coaching Suits You Best?

Which strategy is best for you, then? Your objects and goals will determine the answer. There’s no right or wrong answer here. Or one option is better than the other. It’s all about YOU – What you want to achieve? What resonates with you the most?

Positive psychology coaching can be the best option for you if you want to improve your general well-being and happiness.

Life coaching might be a better fit if you have particular objectives, including enhancing your work or relationships.

It’s also important to keep in mind that many coaches combine positive psychology and life coaching, or they might use parts of both methodologies in their practice.

If you are unclear about which strategy is ideal for you, working with a coach who can evaluate your needs and guide you towards the best course of action might be beneficial. Why not talk to an experienced coach who can help you make an informed decision? Our coaches are ICF certified and offer free clarity calls to help aspiring coaches such as you.
